Betrayal
“Those who don't know the value of loyalty, can never
appreciate the cost of betrayal.” Unknown Author
Chapter One
“….She seizes him and kisses him, and with bold face
she says to him, ‘I had to offer sacrifices, and today I have paid my
vows; so now I have come out to meet you, to seek you eagerly, and I have found
you. I have spread my couch with coverings, coloured linens
from Egyptian linen; I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes,
and cinnamon. Come, let us take our fill of love till morning; let us
delight ourselves with love……
With much seductive speech she
persuades him; with her smooth talk she compels him. All at once he
follows her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a stag is caught fast till
an arrow pierces its liver; as a bird rushes into a snare; he does not
know that it will cost him his life……” Proverbs 7; 13- 23
Amanda stared at the wall clock, 6:30 am; she wished this moment would
last forever. She looked at Alfred lying peacefully by her side, and wondered
what the future hold for them. Their secret relationship has been so guided for
so long, and she’s becoming tired of the sneaking around; she wished she could
have him all to herself. The small crush she developed years ago for him
has turned into a full blown romantic affair between them.
She ran her hand slowly down his back causing him to moan.
“Is it morning yet?” Alfred grinned softly, opening his eyes.
“Hmmm,” She whispered into his ears. “I wish we could have more time to
spend together in bed.” she kissed him.
“It’s still early,” he glanced at the wall clock. “We still have couple
of minutes to spend.” he pulled her to himself.
She chuckled out of spite “I wish…,” her eyes twinkled up to him for a
moment. “You need to get up now before the kids come looking for their dear
daddy.” she jerked away from his embrace.
“C’mon, the kids are probably still snoring away; can’t we stay a little
longer in bed, darling…, please.” he frowned noticing she was wearing her
clothes.
“Today is Sunday Alfred; I have to get the kids ready for church.” she
put on her bathrobe and walked out of the room. She wasn’t about to be caught
naked in bed with him after so many near escape of this.
‘She went into the kid’s room; as suspected, Sophia was awake reading
the kids bible. She’s only nine years old and has been taught from a tender age
to always take her bible first thing in the morning to study and to pray.
Amanda smiled at her; she still has thirty minutes to spare before they
will all get out of bed. She went into the kitchen to wash the dishes from last
night. She had been so tired yesterday after having some guest come over;
pacing swiftly around the kitchen, trying to prepare breakfast and clear the
table all at the same time. Just then, Alfred came into the kitchen and grabbed
her waist.
“Oh!” she moaned softly at his touch.
“You’re supposed to be with me in the room not washing dishes.” he
whispered, kissing the back of her head.
“Oh yeah, lover boy.” she grinned.
“Yeah.” he turned her around to face her.
“Why don’t you help me then?” Amanda asked.
“I don’t do dishes my love.” He beamed, placing a kiss on her forehead.
“Naughty Alfred!” she gently poked his nose. “We really need to be more
careful.” she looked behind him to be sure no one was watching them.
“C’mon, who’s going to tell?” He chuckled, staring into her eyes. There
was no sign of the anxious expression she wore back in the room and he laughed
in triumph kissing her. Just then, they heard the front door open and
immediately tore away from each other. Amanda pulled her bathrobe against
herself while Alfred hurried out of the kitchen.
Seconds later, Anna her elder sister walked into the kitchen.
“Morning Amanda.” Anna greeted, walking into the kitchen with the bags
of groceries.
Amanda shuddered at the sound of her sister, but forced a smile. “Good
morning sis, how was your shift?” Amanda shivered.
“It was ok." she sighed. "No emergencies we couldn’t handle”
Anna replied and took a moment to observe her little sister. “Are you alright?”
she asked, noticing the uneasiness in her.
“I’m fine.” Amanda tried to smile. “Sophia is awake but the twins are
still asleep; I would give them couple of minutes before I wake them.”
“Thanks, I can take it from here. How was your dinner with your
friends yesterday?” Anna asked, anxious to know how it went since her sister
had been preparing for the dinner for almost two weeks now, to make everything
perfect for her guests.
“It was very okay; Marion and her husband are such a great couple. It
was nice seeing them again after so many years,” She beamed in excitement. “And
she really wanted to see you.”
“Aw, that would’ve been nice. Maybe next time when I’m off
work, we could arrange something.” Anna sighed. She put away the groceries; the
fresh milk into the fridge, the bread into the box.
“I’m sure she would love to see her old school mother again.” Amanda
laughed, washing the soap from her hands.
“That would be great!” she yawned from exhaustion. “Is my love
awake?” Anna asked, walking out of the kitchen.
“I haven’t seen him this morning.” Amanda called after her. Of
course I just spent the whole night with him on the same bed….
Anna walked upstairs to their room and found her husband getting up from
the bed.
“Morning,” she greeted, placing a kiss on his cheek. “How was your
night?”
“Great. How was your shift?” he asked.
“It was okay,” Then, her face suddenly lit up. “My fifteen –years-old
coma patient, the one that was out for almost three weeks? She came back during
the night,” Anna said, excited.
“Really!”
“I was so happy. Her parents were so thrilled when they heard the news.”
She said in relief. “Can you believe seeing your daughter lying unconscious for
three whole weeks; in fact, I am so happy for them.”
“I’m happy for them all, thank God for sparing her life,” her husband
felt excited for her, too.
“I have to go prepare breakfast and wake the kids to get ready for
church.” she said.
“But you just came back from work.” Alfred watched as she took off the
dress she was wearing for a bathrobe.
“I’ll catch some sleep when we get back from church.” She walked to him,
took his hands and put them around her waist staring into his eyes.
Alfred shuddered at the sudden affection; he tried avoiding her intense
gaze on him.
“You know there are days when I love you,” She kissed his right cheek.
“And there are other days when I really really love you,” she
kissed the other cheek. “And today is one of those days when I really
reallyreally love you.” She covered his mouth in a passionate kiss.
He hesitated for a moment and returned the kiss. It didn’t feel right to him
but he tried covering up his uneasiness.
After a moment, Alfred jerked away.
“What’s the occasion?” he asked, trying to cover up his hesitation.
“Nothing! Is there a reason why I shouldn’t love my
husband?” her eyes followed his movement.
Alfred frowned.
“Anyway, I just want to remind you of my love for you.” She smiled.
“Oh!” he muttered with a blank emotion.
Anna stared at him for a moment, taken aback by his withdrawal. This
wasn’t the first or second time he’s turned her affection down. She had ignored
it for quite some time, but she knew something was wrong.
“So are you teaching the teenage class today?” she asked, arranging the
bed.
“No, I have asked Brother Julius to take it.”
“I thought this week is your turn?” she straightened to look at him.
“It is but I don’t really feel like it.” he said out of spite.
“You don’t feel like?” she looked at him strangely.
“Yes, I don’t feel like.” he threw her an angry look and walked away.
She stood there in utter confusion as she watched him go into the
bathroom. For months now, he had refused to teach the teenage church, which was
the only responsibility he had outside of work. He had been so passionate about
this task and never missed taking their classes but these days; he has one
excuse or the other not to attend to them.
Her husband is a man of prayer and seeks to please God in all he does,
but his attitude these days is beginning to go against everything he stood for.
She knew something was wrong somewhere but can’t place a finger on it. Her
stomach churned, all on its own, and she inhaled deeply and walked out of the
room.
Alfred leaned against the bathroom door, hearing the bedroom door close.
He felt darkness all around him. When he started the affair with his wife’s
sister, he had been able to control both relationships without one affecting
the other but now, he’s beginning to feel withdrawn from his wife, nothing
attracts him any longer and even her touch is beginning to repulse him. He
inhaled deeply. ‘How did I get this far?” He asked himself.
Every night, he’s always looking forward to hold Amanda in his arms and
make love to her all through the night, even when his wife is off from work and
sleeping on the same bed; he still thinks and fantasizes about her. When he’s
making love with his wife, all he thinks about is making love to Amanda. Their
relationship started off so quick, everything was so fast and before long, they
have crossed the abominable. At first, there was guilt and then fear but now,
there is anger, betrayal, coupled with confusion.
He opened the shower and allowed the water to run until it was hot
enough, so he got in there allowing the water run all over him, wishing he
could turn the hands of time and never got himself into this mess. He’s
destroyed everything with his own hands; his family and his relationship with
God.
