Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, has expressed his
administration’s readiness to probe the three-and-halfyear tenure of his
predecessor, Chief Olusegun Oni, who was removed from office by an
Appeal Court judgement on October 15, 2010.
Fayemi said large-scale fraud was perpetrated by the Oni-led Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, government in the state before it was removed
from office for illegally occupying that position.
The governor spoke at the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, state
party secretariat, where a mammoth crowd of top government
functionaries, party leaders and supporters had gathered to welcome him
back to the state on Saturday following his victory at the Supreme
Court.
The Supreme Court had last Friday thrown out Oni’s appeal seeking a
review of the 2010 judgement that removed the PDP administration from
power.
Fayemi told the mammoth crowd of top government functionaries, ACN
leaders and supporters who had gathered at the state party secretariat
to welcome him back to the state that he would institute a probe into
the management of the state finances under Oni.
He said: “With the conclusion of this case, they (the ousted
government) should be ready to account for how they stole our money, the
contracts they used to siphon our money and all the micro-credit money
they stole.”
But Oni, in a swift response, challenged Fayemi to make good his
threat to probe his administration between 2007 and 2010 through the
constitution of an independent probe panel.
A statement by the former governor’s media aide, Mr. Lere Olayinka,
in Ado Ekiti yesterday said; “This time around, Fayemi must make real
his threat and if he does not, we will go to court to compel him to do
so.
However, he must not be the one to appoint those who will carry out
the probe because the finances of the government during his own tenure
must also be probed.”
Fayemi had said the victory would serve as a tonic for better
performance and an opportunity to sustain good governance being enjoyed
in the state, expressing appreciation to the people for demonstrating
their support for his administration.
