Blessing Okagbare Clinches Silver Medal For Nigeria, Breaks 14-Year Jinx

Blessing Okagbare

Blessing Okagbare on Sunday in Moscow broke a 14-year jinx plaguing Nigeria as her leap of 6.99m earned her a silver medal in the women’s Long Jump at the ongoing IAAF World Athletics Championships.

Before Sunday’s glorious outing, the last time Nigeria won a medal was at the Seville, Spain, at the 1999 edition where Gloria Alozie picked a medal in the 100m hurdles event.
Going by Okagabre’s recent form, many had tipped her to win the event, but she settles for second place as United States’ Bittany Resse’s 7.01m saw her get the gold.
Reese also made history by becoming the first woman to make it a hat-trick of gold medal wins at the World Championships.
Meanwhile, Okagbare is still in the race for the 100m gold medal as the final takes place later on Sunday.
